Through Hala's Eyes
Hala Gül, a Syrian refugee living in Turkey with her family, waits in the doorway for dinner to be ready, Gaziantep, Turkey, Aug. 17, 2023. Hala was just three months old when her family broke through a barbed wire fence to cross from Syria into Turkey. Today, she is nine year old and continues to be a guiding light in her family's quest for peace. Struggling with congenital glaucoma since birth, Hala recently underwent a surgery of which doctors said would help her to both feel and see better. Instead, she woke up with one of her eyes missing.
