Abu Mahmoud Gül, a Syrian refugee living in Turkey with his family, looks up to the sky after hearing noises from a plane while he fans a fire for dinner, Gaziantep, Turkey, Aug. 17, 2023. After escaping Syria in 2015, Abu Mahmoud has tried to keep his family safe despite constant medical, financial, and emotional distress. In February, the family was temporarily without a home following the deadly earthquake that caused devastation, destruction, and flooding in the region.
